Researcher Notes
According to Virginia Birney's research, James Birney (1767-1839) came to Danville in 1792, via Philadelphia. He emigrated from County Caven Ireland at age seventeen. James was Post Master in Danville and operated a dry goods store. He is said to have been a businessman and hemp grower. His famous son, James G. Birney, is well documented an abolitionist and Presidential candidate (1840 and 1844).

This painting was featured in a 2006 exhibit organized by Georgetown College and the Georgetown-Scott County Museum entitled, "A Bostonian painter in Kentucky: Asa Park (1790-1827)".
